The A-10 was designed to provide close air support to ground troops by attacking enemy vehicles such as tanks. Operated primarily by the US Air Force, The A-10 saw extensive action during ‘Desert Storm’. Although it’s actual name is the A-10 Thunderbolt 2, it is commonly called the ‘Warthog’ or ‘Hog’.

This is down to its ugly, no nonsense appearance. One of the most obvious features of the Hog and central to it’s role of tank busting, is the massive nose mounted cannon called the Avenger. This gun is 19 feet long, weighs over 1,800Kg and can fire 3,900 beer bottle sized bullets a minute. Having entered service in October 1977, the Warthog still plays a major role in the USAF but is expected to be fully retired by 2029 when it will be replaced with the F-35.
